THE CHINATOWN STUDIO
We acknowledge that our work takes place on unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. We strive to be in solidarity with Indigenous struggles for sovereignty, the return of stolen land, and reparations for past and ongoing systemic oppression.
VALU CO-OP | 溫哥華藝文工會合作社 operates out of our Chinatown Studio at 525 Carrall St. in the Lim Sai Hor Kow Mock Benevolent Association 林西河總堂九牧公所 building. This historic building erected originally in 1903 by the Chinese Empire Reform Association, has since been a central hub for supporting Chinese-Canadian labourers, and serving the Chinatown Community.
We moved into the studio in January 2020 at the invitation of the Lim Association, and it has become the central place of where we work, where we meet, and where we develop new community projects. The Chinatown Studio is also the location of the Arts and Cultural Workers Union (ACWU) Hall.
Access to our Chinatown Studio is possible thanks to one of our founding board members, David Ng. A talented organizer and artist, David has been working in the Lim Association building for over 20 years and has a long personal relationship with the association itself. Thanks to David’s generous facilitation we continue to do our work in this historic building and look forward to serving the community; and to hosting events, readings, educational opportunities, and workshops on arts and labour.
